Stephen Colbert once remarked that reality has a liberal bias. However, the power of human will to suspend reality is truly impressive. In such a situation, the only rational approach seems to adopt a Buddhist viewpoint of acceptance but not endorsement.
I do believe that ultimately, the universe will sort itself out in the meantime, I will not be bullied or cowed by those who claim the power to cause me to feel suffering or believe in their view of reality.
Here are a few things that I believe in that are real but are currently being denied:
- the importance of diversity
- climate change
- the positive benefits of migrants and immigration in general
- support by the wealthiest country for those who are less fortunate
- science (evolution, vaccines, health care)
- freedom to read any book
Viktor Frankl's book "Man's Search for Meaning" describes how we can approach suffering like that is being deliberately inflicted in people in the service of their repugnant ideology. We need to remember that we should not be attached what we think should be but we still do need to find a life's purpose that can be bigger than these attempts to traumatize us.
I hope that someday soon we can relate to Frankl's quote from Bismark: "Life is like being at the
dentist. You always think that the worst is still to come and yet it is over already".
